But we do. I am convinced that writers have a suppressed urge to mess with their characters to the point of irreversible harm. Conflict is delicious; always has been and always will be. It is the one thing that keeps us, as readers, coming back for more. Without it a story is simply a recount of events, and those can be rather dry if the actions don’t lead to at least a little bit of a consequence.
The world needs to burn a little. We love it when it does.
